Surprisingly Awesome! | GoTrax Ares Electric Scooter
The GoTrax Ares surprised me, from the build quality to the ride quality it exceeded my expectations. Those expectations come back to earth a little when you see the real range but the overall package is a really nicely executed electric scooter.

Hi.Jim.Good to see you again. Thanks for the new video.Cheers🎉❤😊.
Can you get it to hold cruise? It’s in the setting I got the zero start to work
I did find the setting in the manual but didn't really try it out.
all you did was ride it on a flat level surface. Not a realistic ride for most people who have to deal with hills and mountains. I am don't care about speed, I am 70 years old, if I want speed I take my car. What about quality control? Parts fall off? How much is a replacement battery? How far can you go on a long distance up and down mountainous roads? Is it reliable?
Unfortunately I don't have many hills where I live, the one I do for all of my reviews is in this second video ruclips.net/video/PpgoQ3mxaWw/видео.html. I do a bunch of range testing as well, I got between 28 miles @ 20+mph and 52 miles @15mph, of range. Since you live somewhere hilly, you'd get a bit less. I don't do many long term reliability video's.
i just got mine, im assuming i have the same model as yourself. does your drum brake make a clicking sound? mine does, operates fine, acts almost like an antilock feature, on off on off braking which makes the clicking noise. Is mine jacked up or is it normal? thanks in advance
A drum brake is typically very smooth and quiet. I have ridden a few scooters with anti-lock brakes and I find it very annoying. I am not really sure if that is an issue or a new feature, I'd reach out to UScooters and ask.
Can you send your p settings for the controller? I screwed mine up somehow and haquoi somewhat difficult to deal with...thanks
I don't have them saved anywhere unfortunately and don't have the bike. Best of luck!
This review steered me in the right direction. Thanks a lot. I have a non electric fat bike that I want to take on green single tracks; do you have any product recommendations?
If you mean trailer recommendations I highly recommend Burley's. I have a old dog trailer I got for cheap that I plan to convert to haul cargo. Cheers
Give one to me ;) really need one :)
I sure wish I could but they are all sold now!
Any flats? Long term Reliability?
I didn't have any flats, I don't plan to do long term reliability testing. Hopefully some others will respond with long term experiences.
I bought one and the rear tire goes flat all the time actually everytime b4 a ride so I have to pump up b4 I go for a ride.
@@KAnyeDAWay Sounds like a pin hole leak or valve stem. I'd try some soapy water and get a tubeless patch kit (plugs). If it is holding air enough for a ride, it is likely an easy fix.
I wonder how easy it would be to put a lithium battery in it. I switch one of my old hoverboards from lead acid to lithium and it worked great. Also there might be headroom for additional voltage, like what would happen if you put in a 36v lithium pack. Would be fun to see how much it could handle before burning out!
That stem is too far out and low. If only they let you change the stem, it’ll be a perfect ebike.
I think they did it for the weight, high end carbon bikes use this same style of stem/bar system. Maybe they will include a bar upgrade package in the future?
waitin on new charger...then i will be riding mine!!
Nice, what part of Oregon are you in? Native Oregonian here!
Is it possible to switch the handlebars?
Possible yes, simple no.
😂"Whatever I just said," as authentic as you get.
Haha, keepin' it real! Cheers
What's your height? I am 5'9" so I am not sure whether to get the big or small frame height since I am right in the middle of the two.
I am 5'10" with a 32" inseam, I would call Ride1up and ask, personally I should have went smaller.
They should make it in aluminum too
I'd take steel personally, let's go back to something good!
Great video, thank you
Of course, happy to help, did you guy one of these scooters?
Fake ass paid tuber. Here is a real customer review. I bought this scooter and it’s complete disappointment. The steering handle will wobble at 17+ mph. The rear suspension is impossible to adjust due to lack of clearance. The range is a joke. I’m under 170lb and get 10-11 miles full charge. Customer service is not helpful nor responsive. I suggest anyone to avoid this scooter and company
how long did it take to deliver?
I didn't order it, I got it to review, so I can't say, they come when they come!
Mine took about two weeks
I thought it had tube tires?
@@paulwheeler567not mine, definitely tubeless with the sealed stem.
@@ElectronSurfer they are tubless tiress?
I've ridden from my relative's house in Arden Park many times over the last 20 years and immediately recognized where you were riding. I've ridden the length of the American River path many times. I'm wondering how well the CF Racer would get me up Mount Tamalpais here in Marin County though?
Awesome, to me a low power hub motor is not great on hills, the mid-drive system on the Prodigy would be much better. I guess it depends on your riding style but personally I would not go the CF Racer route for hills.
@@ElectronSurferThanks for the helpful advice. I’ll keep researching my options.
It would be nice if they sold the front forks that fit the new front wheel. That way, you can go back to your old setup without a whole lot of headache. That would also speed up the installation.
That is a good idea but with so many different bike headtube sizes that can be problematic. I think they should design a quick release axle version, I think they could do it with the small 250-watt setups. The kit did drop right into one of my 20" wheel bikes fork dropouts. Do you have this kit or are you thinking about getting one?
@@ElectronSurfer I would have considered it until you said the word, "Dremel." I don't want to modify my bike in any way that will keep me from going back to stock.
Thank you for the review.
Of course, happy to do it. Thanks for commenting!
Love the grips & mirror; did these come with the bike or where I can get them?
I actually did a second video talking about the grips and seatpost with links, ruclips.net/user/shorts6JIaf2-NFko. I like the Ergon Biocork grips really well and the Mirrycle mirrors are the best I have found amzn.to/4bMHUu2. Thanks!
Isnt it $300 what do you expect
ok
How many hours for charging the Vsett9+?
I had long recharge times with this scooter, 10-11 hours for me.
Hi there... Possible to fit into a Brompton?
I don't know if they make one long enough. I tend to use a 27.2mm post and then buy the shim needed for my bike, that has let me use the same post on multiple bikes.
Can the V1 (non-XC) accommodate wider tires than the 2 inch street tires that come with it? I would like to be able to swap out for wider and knobbier tires for light trail riding. You could also add a better rigid fork to absorb some of the road vibrations, maybe carbon or whatever they have these days.
I really don't know, I suggest reaching out to Ride1up, I don't have the bike any longer. I thought about a fork change but honestly got a little lazy. Thanks
@@ElectronSurfer Thank you. I called them today but after a long wait on hold I got sent to voice mail. Upon looking at the videos online the tolerances around the fenders look really tight, so I doubt it would fit tires wider than 2 inches. It looks like an easy bike to ride and very efficient but probably not the best bike to take off pavement.
Honest question. Everything your running there at your house can be run off an extension cord rite ? So, I can understand you doing a review on the jackery, and having it as an emergency backup and taking it traveling, ext., but for someone using it to film outside their house, it seems senseless to use the jackery, because you'd be charging a battery to use to charge a battery. Seems like a waste of the gackery battery. Again, I'm not saying this to be rude. Maybe just a thought.
For me grabbing the Jackery is way easier than dragging around an extension cord when I am shooting for longer than the camera battery lasts. Plus there is less to trip over.
How many miles will it go if you do 15 mph the entire ride
I got 10.6 miles to no battery left and tried to maintain 15 mph as much as I could.
@@ElectronSurfer I’m wondering if I should retune the g2 plus gotrax I got and grab this one.. I’m still a lil worried tho bc the g2plus was supposed to go 7 miles and maxes out at 2 miles😭😭
That's a short range, I find that about half of advertised is normal so I'd take what range you need an look for a scooter advertising over twice that.
I currently ride a regular hybrid bike through mountainous terrain in Nevada, with elevations changes from 200 to about 1000 feet. Often, fatigue sets in, and the ride back can be brutal. What are your thoughts on the CF Racer 1 handling these conditions? I'm looking for a bike that can assist me but still allows me to turn off the motor. Do you think having gears only in the rear would be sufficient?
I would do the ride and see what range of gears you actually use on your hybrid to see if this bike will work. The CF Racer 1 will only make it a little easier so you would likely still have to shift the same amount and only you know if the number of gears will work, I don't live in a hilly area. I would never turn the motor off completely, if you want to do that you can save 10 pounds and get a non-powered carbon bike.
Electric is scooter is my only transportation. I stealth ride on sidewalk, bike lane, and road. It is better than riding an e-bike because it's so easy to hop on and hop off. I feel an electric scooter is the best kept secret and nobody knows how good it is. I feel only I know this and nobody else does. I'm in the middle of Honolulu and I rarely see other e-scooter rider. Like I said, an electric scooter is my best kept secret. I have a grin on my face every time I think about it. My scooter is a Niu Kqi3 Pro with about 5000 miles rode so far.
I totally agree for transportation, especially for how efficient in energy and space they are, the electric scooter is awesome. Glad to hear it is working so great for you on the island, the best is riding past people stuck in their cars! Mahalo!
@@ElectronSurfer I steath ride meaning i stay away from cars and pedestrians. When there's a pedestrian coming my way, I swerve onto the road. When theres a car coming near me, i swerve onto the sidewalk. To the cars and the pedestrians, I'm never near them (most of the time).
What name are those purple braided sleeves? Beautiful detail.
I found them on Amazon for a little color while organizing the wires, amzn.to/3X32Vwb.
Just convert to tubeless and run lower pressures
interesting suggestion, thanks!
If you run it in dual mode it will use less battery.
I have never seen it use less, but single mode doesn't use very much, if any, less.
just think of it as the preliminery scuwter before all the bellz and whistlez
That is fair, it will be the scooter that will make you want to buy a nicer one!
Thanks for the video! I was considering the wald or swagman. Thanks for mentioning the rattling and showing the size when folded and unfolded. I'll go with your recommendation. Great vid!
Happy to help out, let me know how you like it!
Looks like you're riding along the American River near Carmichael CA - nice trail and nice bike.
Yep, that's the home loop. Definitely a solid bike for the mostly flat trails around here. Cheers
@@ElectronSurfer Was thinking about buying. Are you implying that it's not so good on hills? I've ridden that trail a couple times from Sac to Folsum and back. Nice ride indeed. Thanks!
I think I said it straight out vs implying! I don't think a low power hub motor is the right option for hills, a mid-drive is soo much better. It will give you some help so depending on how you ride it could work but the motor will be easily overworked.
I counted the magnets when I took the motor apart and there were 30 so I set it to that value. I havent’t noticed a difference. The speedometer is like 4 km/h off. I tried a few settings to no avail. Any ideas?
The magnet setting is totally goofy, I don't even know what it actually connects to, i should connect to the hall sensors to ensure the motor runs smooth. 4km off isn't bad for these displays, I usually play with the tire diameter to try to get closer to the actual speed.
I have it and man it to work and back and it’s amazing
Great I know some other folks that commute on this scooter and it really holds up, cheers!
Is this GT 2020 the S2 or S3 version? I can't seem to find it anywhere :(
I don't know about the S2 or S3 denominations, it was only called the GT 2020 at the time of review.
Did you mention the make & model of the bike for this project?
It's a Bike Friday Haul-a-day. Under 40lb full capacity cargo bike, maybe not the best use in hindsight. I plan to put on another 20" wheel bike but wish the speed limits could be split apart better.
@@ElectronSurfer nice looking cargobike. I am currently riding my first ebike, a Dahon K-One Mid-Drive. Purchased second hand for $500. I really like the portability and 20" wheels are fun, like riding BMX again. That said, I am already preparing to flash the motor with open source firmware. I am also interested in doing my own conversion. Your videos are fun and inspirational.
@@ElectronSurfer can you please clarify what you "speed limits" set apart better means?
@@edwinreidel1889 The first speed limit doesn't cut out until 16 mph when fully charged. That means it is always trying to push you up to that speed as long as you are pedaling. The speed limits all are between 15 and 20 mph, when having them spread apart, say starting at 6 or 8 mph, would make for a much useable kit in my opinion.
Leaning back to stop is a challenge.
I found it pretty intuitive, but I could see it not being easy for all.
Hey guy, how is the v11? I got the v13 and ITS TOO HEAVY 😩. I'm thinking about getting a v11. Please advise
When they started a couple years ago they had a 500 Watt version which seems more appropriate for the USA market. Regardless of the version they should upgrade the battery to much higher voltage and capacity. What did you end up paying for it? Do they produce their products in batches? It allways seems you have to pre-order, seems a little sketchy...
I think I paid just a little under $800 with tax, they do not make their price very obvious that is for sure. The build seems solid but I agree a bit more battery capacity would be welcome. Cheers!
@@ElectronSurferDo they sell a 2nd battery? I tend to buy a 2nd battery for longer rides.
@@MumfordJim Yes they do, they now have a battery that is double the size of the one I bought.
🚨🚨
I'm a bit unsure what the symbols mean, but thanks!?
Lot has improved in 4 years. I have a Toseven DM01 kit coming in two days, so excited!!
I have been interested in that same kit, I was hoping they would come down in price. Let me know what you think of it.
Brother I have an e bike named as Raymon hardray 4.0. It has a yamaha mid drive motor and a yamaha display. I tried to increase the speed of the bike by putting magnet to pedals and removing sensor from its original place.. it worked perfectly but suddenly it stopped working completely. It gives very little peddle assist. Before I could go max 16miles but now the motor doesn’t support 5 miles. The change in the display that appears after this problem is that the range shown on the display is blinking. It never blinked before. Please help me. I haven’t found any video to solve this problem. No one in my area is able to identify the problem
Unfortunately I have no experience with yamaha systems, perhaps someone else will see this.
This is still the best power to weight ratio scooter you can get! I've put 256 miles on mine and am very happy with it. I easily achieve 31 mph and I weigh 185 lbs
I never saw those kind of speeds on mine but I don't disagree, awesome power to weight. Cheers
I do group rides 2 times a week. 1 solo ride a week. I'm looking for an ebike that I can use for windy days, or if we climb some small hills. Is this bike a good choice for group rides?
I think that is a really good use for this bike, it rolls really well for an ebike and fits right in with other road bikes, I think it would be easy to control and get the feel of for a group ride. Thanks for the question.
@@ElectronSurfer Are there any sensors on this bike that will hook up to my Garmin Edge?
@@vernfrier1771 I don't think there is, id reach out to Ride1up directly though to be sure.

@@vernfrier1771 I appreciate the update!
Bicicleta mea electrică venit cu aceste îmbunătățiri și cu frane magura mt 4 foarte mult mai bune față de tektro recomand să le schimbi 👍
100% Magura brakes are excellent! A great option when you have to make a change.
Does this work at all for climbing hills? I know you mentioned that it’s not something you get exclusively for climbing, but does it make it easier to climb if you’re tired and want assist to make it up?
It helps a little, i think a good analogy would be you could tackle a hill seated that without the motor you'd have to stand up to make it. The motor itself isn't strong enough for many hills by just activating the cadence senor, so you will have to add something. I hope that helps.
Hi can it be on any speed mode? Not managed to destrict so far
I have had it be finicky. I find it works best if you turn off, wait a few seconds, turn back on then do the throttle/brake hold and 10 presses. Sometimes you have to do it a few times, when you get the 2 beeps after 10 presses, you know it's done.
@@ElectronSurfer Thank you. I did actually manage to do it in the end
